And Grankton was a terrible person in a lot of ways, but tended to point the children towards other money-making schemes when the weather turned this chilled. Mostly because he didn't want to deal with illnesses making his little labor force less effective, but it worked in their favor so no one was about to comment or complain.

But the almost awkward way the other seemed to cast about for an explanation, and what followed, did seem to ease his concerns at least a bit. Especially the bit about his son being adopted.
