Lately I've encountered several new people who are struggling with the transition from their world to Caldera, particularly with a place to stay. Either blowing their whole stipend on a week at an inn, or sleeping "rough"- which I don't even want to think about. I know some of us prefer to sleep outside but I don't think anyone should feel like they have to because there's no better option. Also, the housing options for new Visitors kind of suck- when I visited John in the Downs before he lived with me, I felt genuinely unsafe, and he'd been recently punched in the bar below his apartment.
As a result I've been offering for people to stay with me or stay in the shack I used to live in, but y'know, those houses only have so much space. Once they're full of strays (as they now are), future strays are out of luck.
So, I'm thinking... What if I opened some kind of Inn or hotel that's free for Visitors to stay at, for as long as they want? It could act as a sort of info hub for them to ask questions and get connected with resources to ease their transition. I was thinking it could also have a tavern for free food, and Lioriley could host the mingles there, so new people could easily discover it and know it's an option. It also doesn't have to be only for new Visitors- long term folks who live outside and just want a warm meal and a bed occasionally, or people who prefer not to settle in one place, could drop in whenever. And obviously the tavern could be used by anyone at any time.
Oh, Finnick. That is the most you idea I've ever heard. You have such a big heart.
But yes, I like it. It could facilitate early communication between new arrivals, as well, which we desperately need. The mingles do a lot of heavy lifting and Lioriley is to be commended but a single night in a tavern can only do so much. Having to live in close proximity while people get their feet under them and adjust is bound to be different.
Funding might get tricky, but I'll do whatever I can. Including shaking other people down for Bones, if necessary. [You know, in a nice way. Or pool hustling in the Downs, whatever.]
Yes, I think it could foster more community and trust among us to share space more often. Easier to link up for quests when you see people in passing.
I plan to use some of my Bones, as I have a lot, but I'm sure I'll need way more, yeah. I think I'll make it transparent that it runs on donation, and somehow encourage Visitors and natives to donate. If you could help in that department I'd really appreciate it.
