It's customary to have a Wake after the subject thereof dies. Even Loki knows that. But this is a special occasion. Ego-death is coming to his alternate, and the idea of letting him go off to perish alone, uncertain he will even be mourned, is too dark a proposition even for a flawed and callous person to contemplate.

That, and this Loki has been in a melancholy mood since speaking to the spirit of Frigga. He anticipates a dark choice of his own, sooner or later, and where the fates will send him after that, he can't know. Maybe oblivion, although even at that rate there may be worse places.

What's important right now is that no one dies unremembered. And honestly, any excuse for mischief a party. The first text rolls out to Harley, an innocent enough invitation to join them for milkshakes. Cricket is next, because it occurs to him that Cricket has plenty of liquor, which is good for a reckless celebration.

Things snowball from there.

As long as they don't destroy too much property, they'll call the night a success.

Kinner's still not too sure what's going on with the Lokis, but he's not opposed to a night out on the town. So a small, scar-faced man in polar clothing shuffles in, carrying some popcorn shrimp if anybody wants them. Besides, he's in the mood to try out milkshakes. As a cook, he feels obliged to sample a variety of foods.

"Evening, Loki," he says, "and Loki. I brought shrimp, if anyone wants some."

"Kinner!" Loki gestured him in with a smile, expression brightening when he heard there was food to be had. "Shrimp? You're a delight, really!"

"Popcorn shrimp." Kinner lays the platter down for them to have access to. "In return, I'd like to try one of those milkshakes. What flavors do you have?" He'll have booze, too, he's no stranger to alcohol, but he'd like to have some food in his stomach before he starts drinking.

Loki of course is a bottomless pit when he sets his heart to it so is happy to pluck up a piece to sample, letting out a pleased hum at the taste of the shrimp.

"Wonderful! There's all manner of flavors to be had! My counterpart's been rather fond of the peppermint today."

Kinner nods. "Peppermint. I'll take your word for it. Two of the same person in one place...Connant and old Vance Norris would have a lot of questions."

He returns with a peppermint milkshake a short while later, sipping it discreetly.

"I'll say that it's good to have something besides canned food and beef. This is good stuff."

Loki's taking his time on his own strawberry shake, a smile on his face at Kinner's assessment.

"Makes me think of how excited I was to try Midgard food. Asgardian cuisine is a lot of roast meats and tubers. It gets... monotonous after a time, I'm sure you can imagine!"

Kinner enjoys his milkshake, that's for sure. He'll probably get another.

"Midgard? Asgard?" Kinner assumes these are other worlds, because he's never heard of these places. "In any case, it's good to have variety in your diet. Take it from me - I'm a cook. I know these things."

"Oh, us gods don't really have to worry about that. But it does get dreadfully dull. Earth has so much variety in comparison."

Milkshakes are one such delightful example. And don't feel bad Kinner, Loki is on Milkshake #3 here.

Azwel spits out another tied cherry stem and grins. "Ah, hullo, Kinner. What is that delightful scent?"

Kinner smiles proudly. He's satisfied with his work. "Popcorn shrimp, sir. I made them in my shop today and figured this party could use a platter. Feel free to try some."

"I believe I shall!"

Pardon him as he just... picks one up. Pops it in his mouth.

"I say, this is quite tasty...."

"Thank you. I do my best."

Kinner follows suit, grabbing a shrimp and eating it with a quiet crunch. He swallows.

"Glad you like 'em. There's plenty more where that came from. Got anything here you'd recommend?"

"There are these wonderful things called 'milkshakes' that you simply must try!" Why, no, there was no such thing where he's from, but he's a fan, now. "Oh, and I'm told there's a bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich that's very popular, though I can't imagine why--raw greens are dreadfully unhealthy..."

Kinner grins in reply. "Oh, I've had plenty of milkshakes. And the second part...you mean a hamburger?" Kinner's smile turns into a grin. He's quite fond of hamburgers, and it's been too long since he's had one. "You'll have to show me where I can find those. They may not be the healthiest, but they taste delicious. Take my word for it."

"I think they offer them here," comes the slightly puzzled reply. Restaurants are not as much of a thing in his day as they are, now, at least not in Europe.

"Hello! And welcome. I grew up." Loki tells him pleasantly.

"Did you cook them yourself? The salmon you made for CJ looked very good."

"I cook all my food myself," Kinner explains. "Wouldn't be Kinner's Kippers if I didn't."

So the younger Loki grew up? Kinner's not sure what's going on, but he's glad to see this Loki again.

"And I'm glad CJ enjoyed the salmon."

Well, in that case, if would be rude not to taste them! Loki takes a couple of the shrimp delicately.

"I wish I had thought to invite him tonight. I don't have Hermione's PINpoint number, though." His smile is wry but almost soft. He really is grateful for the kindness of the witch and her familiar.

"What are you serving? Other than shrimp and salmon? I'll visit again."

Nodding, Kinner invites Loki to take the shrimp. That's what he'd brought it for!

"I got sushi, tuna, lobsters, oysters, clams, crabs...you name it, I've got it. I'll take requests ahead of time, too, if you have any."

"Hermione's a nice person. She sure was helpful to me." Kinner smiles. "She's got a nice cat, too."

[coldsong]

"If I give you my contact information, will you let me know when softshell crabs are in season? I have a taste for them occasionally." They're weird little things, visually, but it's worth ignoring the little legs sticking out for the flavor when they're properly fried.

Loki is far less food-oriented than many in the Nexus, but he likes a treat now and then. And he has no interest in eating Kinner so that's a point in his favor, surely.

Kinner fumbles in his winter coat, coming out with his PINpoint. He's still getting used to them, of course, but he likes to think he's getting better. He offers it to Loki so he can add his information to it. The technology's a marvel - nothing like it existed in Kinner's home time.

"Sure thing. I'll let you know when I've got softshell crabs in stock, no problem. I've got somethin' of a soft spot for them myself."

And from riiiight over his shoulder, descends one sharp clawed hand, snagging just one little shrimp as the hiss and pop of that goddamn radio breaks the air.

"Don't mind if I do, Kinner!" Look how nice he's being, not using your adorable new nickname.

Kinner is relieved that Alastor's not using that damned nickname. Thank goodness for small mercies, he figures. The sound of the radio alone, though, makes the small cook jump.

"Glad you're enjoying 'em." Kinner's tense, but manages to be polite. "I made 'em myself."

"I can tell, you're a real chef, aintcha?" A few more vanish down that fanged maw, before, mercifully for Kinner, he lets off.

If only to orient himself in front of the human.

"You know how to make Jambalaya with crawfish, Kinner?"

"I try," Kinner says. He does consider himself a fairly good cook. "I've been gettin' better since I came here. Got more ingredients to use."

Tater tots among them, of course.

"Yes, I do know how to make that." Thankfully, that's one of the recipes he learned about in the Grand Library. "You want some, I'm guessin'?"
